Ocean View Residence, Virginia Beach

This Ocean View residence in Virginia Beach called for a landscape that would complement the home's contemporary coastal architecture while creating a warm, highly crafted sense of arrival. bluegreenLA developed a restrained palette of materials and plantings that balances the home's clean geometry with the movement and texture of the coastal landscape.

A custom horizontal wood fence, designed by bluegreenLA with alternating 4" and 6" slats, provides privacy while reinforcing the home's modern aesthetic. Marine-grade 316 stainless steel fasteners and hardware were specified throughout for durability in the coastal environment.

The front landscape is framed by Taylor Junipers and anchored by custom raised steel planters containing sculptural black pines, hand-selected from a local grower in Pungo. Masses of ornamental grasses soften the architectural elements and introduce movement and texture throughout the composition.

One of the defining features of the landscape is the front walkway, where Chatham Blue Granite steppers, sourced from a quarry in the Northeast, are arranged in a deliberately staggered pattern. The large-format granite stepping stones are surrounded by high-polished black Mexican beach pebbles, creating a distinctive dark ground plane that emphasizes the geometry of the walkway and provides a sophisticated connection between the architecture and landscape.

The result is a contemporary coastal landscape that is intentionally restrained and modern yet rich in texture—combining custom-built elements, regionally sourced materials, sculptural plantings, and durable details designed to withstand the coastal environment.
